In this post I’ll cover the 4 essential steps to unlock your dream job. Don’t dig out your CV just yet…..
When you’re desperate to leave a job you hate, it’s an all-consuming feeling.
Sundays feel like Groundhog Day and once the clock has passed 4pm all you can think about is having work on Monday.
The feeling of dread sucks all the joy out of what’s left of your weekend. It isn’t surprising that in this sort of situation you’ll feel like ANY job would be better than where you are now.
The worst thing you can do is go from the frying pan into the fire.
Believe me, I’ve done it, and I’ve witnessed other people do it. I’ve even tried to stop people doing it, with little success. You won’t even realise you’re doing it because the chimp in your head will be in escape mode.
Anything is better than where you are now.
If you’re reading this dreading Monday, or at work hating life, I have good news for you:
Here are 4 things you need to know Ulnock your Dream job
Know your values:
Values are the foundation of who you are and what you stand for.
When these are not being fulfilled by your environment, you’ll end up in conflict with yourself, and others.
Take some time to identify values that are most important to you. You can use this free values workbook l I made to discover yours:
When you know what values really matter to you, you’ll be able to identify people and environments that will match them.
You’ll be able to confidently make decisions about job offers and promotions, and spend less time agonising over whether you’ve made the right choice.
Know your strengths:
The reason for knowing your strengths is simple: the more you’re able to use your strengths the more motivated and positive you’ll feel.
You can discover them for free here. Or, ask some people whose opinion you value and trust what they think your strengths are. This will help you spot common ones you can focus on.
Know your achievements:
It’s easy to forget all the amazing things you have achieved.
A really easy trick to remind yourself is to check through your calendar. This will help jog your memory about work you’ve been involved in to help you remember what you’ve achieved. Also check through your emails for any feedback you have received from people.
Why not go back further; draw out a timeline of your career and write down all that you achieved in each role.
Know your goals:
Imagine yourself in a year’s time.
You’re happy in your job and your life. What does your day look like? What sort of things are you working on? How do you feel?
Asking yourself these sorts of questions will help you build a picture of a job and lifestyle that appeals to you.
Now you can formulate goals that are truly aligned with what you want.
What next?
As the hunt for talent continues to gather pace, escaping a job you hate is easier than it’s ever been.
