Overcoming Rejection: 5 Ways To Come Back Stronger
Have you experienced a set-back or rejection in your job search and don’t know how to carry on? This is for you.
Rejection is Sh*t. At the time of writing this many women I’ve spoken to have experienced setbacks over the last week, including me.
- One had a job offer sabotaged by a former boss.
- Another was denied a promotion despite doing the job for a year.
- Another had an offer pulled with no explanation.
- One was even referred into the role by a friend and still rejected with no reason given
- I was rejected for a promotion opportunity due to a policy requiring me to spend a year in my current role. “Be bold,” they said. “Not like that,” they said.
As horrible as rejection and setbacks are, you’ve got more choices than you realise.
Here 5 ways to overcome rejection:
1: Feel sad, but not for too long:
It’s important to let yourself feel sad if you want to. Give yourself a time limit though, don’t let the days roll into weeks.
2: Get some rest:
Did you know there are 7 different types of rest? I only recently found out about this, choose one that works for you here: 7 types of rest
3: Choose how you react:
I know it might feel like you don’t have many choices just now, but you do. YOU can choose, how YOU react to the rejection.
4: Choose where you put your energy:
You can put your energy into feeling annoyed, upset etc, but after a while, make a new choice about where to put your energy. What if you put your energy back into your job search? Or into learning new skills?
5: Don’t give up:
Now is not the time to give up. I know it’s hard, and you might feel like you want to curl up in a ball and ignore the world but don’t give in now.
A new opportunity could be just around the corner, it could be one application, one networking event, one linked in post or one conversation away.
Now, get on and do it.
