3 easy questions to reflect and set yourself up for success
I’m going to share 3 easy questions to reflect and set yourself up for success. This is the perfect way to recognise what you’ve achieved and look forward to the opportunities ahead of you.
Whether it’s new year, the start of spring, or the end of a journey to something, it’s easy to feel pressured into making plans and to become a better, happier, kinder, wiser and happier person.
If you’re feeling the pressure, you’re in the right place.
I know these questions work.
I’ve used them coaching many high performing teams, and even myself.
When I worked as a Scrum Master, the process of regularly reflecting is one of the reasons I ran one of the highest performing team on the programme. We were tasked with building brand new payments systems, on one of the few truly greenfield projects in banking. Complex doesn’t begin to describe the challenges we faced.
In Scrum, a session to reflect is called a Retrospective. The beauty of a retro is that it you can easily apply it to any part of your life. You can call it whatever you want, the results will still be as good.
Anytime, is the perfect time to reflect on all that you’ve achieved and set yourself up for success. Whatever that looks like for you.
Here are 3 easy questions to reflect and set yourself up for success:
What went well?
You can pick anything, no matter how big or small.
Grab some paper and a pen, or open a whiteboard if you want to keep it digital and write anything that comes to mind. Set a timer if you want to make sure you give each of these questions equal attention.
If for any reason you can’t think of anything straight away, don’t worry. Check back through some photos to jog your memory.
What didn’t go so well?
Again, this can be anything. Lose any judgement you might have over yourself and write it all down.
A timer will be useful here to stop you from getting carried away, if there are lot’s of things. Remember, now is not the time to be too hard on yourself.
What do I want to improve?
Again you can write down any many things as you want.
You can choose anything to do with your work life, social life, love life, it really doesn’t matter, write down whatever comes to mind.
They can be big things, small things, ‘change the world’ things, why limit yourself? (again timer could be useful to avoid overwhelm).
Pick one thing
Once you have a note of all the things you want to improve, pick one to focus on for a set period of time.
Setting yourself up for success in the new year doesn’t have to feel daunting. You don’t need to put pressure on yourself, there is enough of that in the world already.
You can use these 3 easy questions to reflect and set yourself up for success any time of the year.
