Finally Pursuing My Dream
I’m ready to be a Recruitment Consultant
After a couple of years building on my experience, I reached that moment where I finally felt like I was ready to pursue my dream of being a Recruitment Consultant.
I was still eternally grateful to the one who had helped me get my first ‘real job’. Still, I dreamt of becoming a Recruitment Consultant and helping other people just like me change their lives.
I was working for an offshore engineering firm, hiring out everything from generators to shackles and wire rope slings. It was usually just me and my manager in the office.
I found myself on my own, doing most of the work, almost all of the time. It almost reminded me of my job in the supermarket café, I just didn’t have blue apron on now.
My Dream
This afforded me a lot of time with my own thoughts, which all lead me back to my dream, to be a Recruitment Consultant.
It was the middle of July, the sun was beaming down outside, as I sat on my chair at my brown corner desk, looking across the green office carpet to the window I felt the urge to pursue my dream rush through me.
And that was it, I was in the blocks at the start of the race, with the finish line in sight. The crowd were cheering, and I was poised to go, ‘I am ready to become a recruiter now’.
Just Ask
I got in contact with the same company that had placed me in my first ‘real job’ and asked if they would consider me for a job with them as a Recruitment Consultant.
At the time it was ‘the’ company to work for, only the best people worked for them, the Rolls Royce of the recruitment companies.
To my delight I got a reply from them, inviting me in for an interview with one of their managers called Mike
I felt my world fill with sunshine that day.
Don’t be late
On day of my interview and I finished work early to get back into town. It took the best part of an hour to drive seven miles in typical ‘big city’ rush hour traffic and my interview was at 6pm.
I hurried down the high street after parking my car, checking my watch again and again. I didn’t want to be late!
When I arrived at the office I looked at the sign above the company’s door, and imagined how proud I would feel to pass under it every day on my way into work.
My First Interview
I went in and was greeted very politely by Claire on reception. My heart rate was on its way up now as I speculated about what Mike might be like and what sort of interview questions I might be asked. I sat down to wait for Mike quietly looking around, wondering what it would be like to work here.
Mike breezed into reception a few minutes later with the brightest, most friendly smile on his face—his enthusiasm was infectious. He said it was lovely to meet me and shook my hand.
Mike was literally radiating positivity, an impressive feat at 6pm on a weekday evening when you are still in the office. My heart slowed down, and I was ready.
Have I done enough?
I told Mike about how I had been inspired by his colleague who placed me in my first real job, and that working as a recruitment consultant for them would be a dream come true for me.
“I’d love to walk down the main street in my suit with your company’s business cards in my purse” I exclaimed and then followed with:
“I can’t put in to words how proud I would feel to be able to pass under that sign above the door every day before I start work. It would mean the world to me.”
Luckily Mike wasn’t put off my my eagerness, not that I was worried. ALL I wanted was that job.
The rest interview felt like more of a chat than anything else and the conversation flowed.
I left hoping that I had done enough to be considered for the next stage of the process……
