Getting my dream job
A second interview!
A second interview!!! I was so excited; I was in the last quarter of the race now, on track to secure my dream job.
The days flew in and I was back in reception waiting to be seen by Steven, one of the company’s directors.
Claire let me know that Steven was ready to see me and I could head up to the top floor.
Three or four staircases later I was there, thank goodness for deodorant on that hot summers day. Then I was worrying about my hand being too clammy for the all-important handshake I had been practicing for.
I knew how much I needed to make a good first impression.
Steven met me at the top of the stairs, I think I carried the handshake off, firm but did not crush his hand (at least I don’t think I did).
Steven was a slim, quietly spoken man, his eyes made me feel like they were staring straight into my soul, which was a little nerve-wracking.
I remember clocking the well-known book about making friends and influencing people on his bookcase, wondering why someone might need a book about that. It was a little strange.
Question I have never forgotten
The question I have never forgotten him asking me was this:
The answer was an obvious one for me as I replied,
My dream came true
To this day, I still do not know if my answer was what he was looking for, but I did something right because I got offered the job in a matter of days.
All these years later I still cannot put into words how excited I was. I was on the podium with my gold medal, and I had made it. Soon I would get to walk down the high street in my suit with my Filofax (yes Filofax) full of my notes and business cards, passing under that sign that I had looked up to on my way to my interview.
It really had happened. I had made it, my dream had come true, I was now officially a Recruitment Consultant.
I could now help other people, just like me change their lives.
